Injury Time
Blasted gravity! I have done it yet again! I fell down last night and hurt my knee. This is regular fixture in my life. For as long as I can remember I keep sustaining all sorts of injuries on my knees. The right one is more prone to calamity. The issue here is not the injury, it is the consequence it will have on work. Yes, you read correctly. WORK. Now, I am no footballer, model or walking tour guide. I create and enforce (bloody capitalist) coporate policy. I am a slave driver at best and a postperson at worst. So of what use is a healthy knee in this lowly line of work? None. Here lies my predicament - The wound is an open one. A deep gash over the knee cap. Blood is still oozing out. I am considering getting it dressed (Dr.Soh, I promise not to dig my finger nails in this time! But you shan't have the pleasure of holding my leg and ministering to my knee this time! I am sorry!) But I also know that I would have to be careful and not allow it to be disturbed in any way. This rules out wearing trousers or long skirts as the fabric would rub against the knee.
Now my clothes have been an issue at work, ever since I joined. And this is a discussion that will go on till the cows come home. I dont think it would be very well received if I did wear a knee length skirt, to prevent more damage to the knee. I am a tease, or so I am told. My clothes are provocative, I hear. It amuses me. The fact is that I am sexy, confident and intelligent (and I say this with objectivity and earnestness), so I would look sexy even in a dish cloth (my would that be hot!) What I wear is immaterial. The women and men are still going to feel threatened by me. The 'friend at work' (FAW from now on) tells me: "I am so concerned, I have been hearing so many rumours about you. I have to give you feedback. Everyone talks about your clothes. Everyone thinks thatt you are having an affair with SD...." she tries to counsel me. Laughable. She is going to take up the dress code issue with senior management as it hampers her ability to "enforce discipline". Enforce discipline. Althusser, Gramsci, Foucault, Ko, Portmanteau: are you listening. "Enforce Discipline".... Do I need to explain what that phrase does to me? Need I go on?
