Classification

What kind of music do you like? What kind of movies do you like? What kind of books do you like? Stop asking me such questions in an attempt to classify me. I do not know what kind of anything I like. I like different things. At different points of time. I do not have 'a favourite' movie, book, song, group, colour...
I joined a web network (is that what they call those things?) since a friend invited me to and I thought it would be a great idea to see what actually happens in one of these things. The questionnaire that I was expected to fill was absoultely horrendous! But the worst yet is 'What kind of man do you want?'. I do not know. I am attracted to all sorts of people: rich, poor, handsome, ugly, intelligent, stupid, single, married... Then they refine it to 'What kind of man do you want to get married to?' ('Aah, now she cannot 'dodge' the question' [bated breath]) I dont know if I want to get married. Pray, enlighten me, what purpose does marriage serve?
The need to brakcet someone in a category is essential to the fettering of one's spirit: 'How can you do that? You are a ..... That isnt something a ..... can do!' The myth, that it is important to belong: to a group, a category, is vital for one's identity and survival, is one that is one the most common used in the process of socialization. It is beyond me to understand how being the same as everyone else does any good for one's identity? To me, its a simple matter to being able to excerise power and constraint far more easily through equalitarianism - If everyone is the same and everyone is equal, then, what is good for one is good for all. (See Adorno/Hockheimer's exposition of the Culture Industry on how categorisation works - and if you say that I have more neo-marxist references than post-modern... I think you know how I would respond!)
Think about the different people you know. Try and categorize them and put them into different boxes. You would need differnet kinds of boxes to begin with. In your attempt to fit them into a category you will need to cut out certain parts. Once you have done that, they are no longer the person you started with. Now that you have changed them, their behaviour in the boxes cannot be guaranteed to be the same. Need I go on in my description? You attempted to create a water tight classification, an iron cage of bureaucracy, and are left with the same pandemonium you started with!
